Banksy: from the street to the art market
A street artist as enigmatic as he is provocative, Banksy made a sensational entry into the world of contemporary art and has never ceased to amaze. Originally from Bristol, England, his true identity remains a mystery, adding another element of fascination to an already captivating body of work. His art, often made with stencils, evokes powerful social and political messages, yet is imbued with a distinctive aesthetic. Today, walls around the world bear the imprint of his creative genius, defying artistic convention and provoking thought in the viewer.

One of Banksy’s most iconic works, ‘Girl with a Balloon’, depicts a young girl reaching for a red, heart-shaped balloon. This simple but deeply emotional image has become a global symbol of hope and innocence.
The work was also the subject of a daring trick played by the artist in October 2018, when it was partially destroyed by a mechanism built into the frame, just after being sold for over £1 million.
This spectacular performance, entitled ‘Love is in the Bin’, carried with it a powerful artistic claim. Banksy clearly intended to criticise the art market and question the monetary value attributed to a work of art.
Three years after this resounding action, ‘Love is in the Bin’ returned to the Sotheby’s auction block. The painting eventually sold for nearly €22 million.

Banksy is not simply a street artist, but an intellectual and a provocateur. His works, often tinged with black humour, tackle themes such as social injustice, war, excessive consumption and surveillance. Each of his creations is a bold statement, challenging established norms and inviting the public to question the status quo.
What also sets Banksy apart is his ability to use art as an instrument of protest. His famous ‘Flower Thrower’ substitutes flowers for objects of violence, sending a powerful message about choosing beauty and peace over destruction.

Controversy often surrounds Banksy, with some seeing him as a vandal and others as a subversive genius. However, his impact on the art world is undeniable. Some of his works have even left the streets to be exhibited in prestigious galleries, challenging the traditional confrontation between street art and more institutional art.
Banksy’s elusive identity adds yet another dimension to his legacy. He remains an enigma, an artist whose work speaks louder than his person. His desire to remain anonymous seems to multiply the power of his creations, freeing them from certain constraints, including that of celebrity.
Banksy has redefined the boundaries of contemporary art, combining social provocation with a powerful visual aesthetic. His art, which transcends physical boundaries, continues to inspire and question, while underlining the transformative power of artistic expression in modern society.
